I am the son of a Korean adoptee, a descendant of Black Wall Street business owners who survived the Tulsa Race Riots, and a Korean simultaneous interpreter.
I didn't grow up speaking Korean. I learned because of my interest in my family's history. My mother was adopted from South Korea in the 1960s to an African-American family in Alaska.
This led me to a long journey of travel, struggle, joy, and embarrassment in order to speak Korean as fluently as I do today.
"When I sought to learn more about interpreting I was told it's a "pipe dream" for me
and that I should find some other work to do."
Well, while growing up Mom always emphasized that we have family in South Korea (even though we still haven't found them yet) and we have a cultural identity and history tied to it. In fact, Mom emphasized awareness of Korea so much that she'd practically force us to eat American-style food with chopsticks!
Well, when it came time for me to graduate high school there was only one thing that came to my mind: I want to do something with this Korean stuff. That's when I began studying the Korean language.
I moved to Korea for a year to study at a language academy then I returned to the States. I wanted to become a language interpreter. When I sought to learn more about interpreting I was told that it's "a pipe dream" for me and that I should find some other work to do. I didn't even bat an eye to that statement.
I kept pushing my Korean language skills until I was able to interpret in court and then even in international conferences as a simultaneous interpreter.
(Simultaneous interpretation is the most advanced and difficult form of language interpretation, where the speaker doesn’t stop speaking and the interpreter must listen while simultaneously interpret. Often coined “UN-style interpretation”).
Since then I've interpreted the voices of US President Joe Biden, members of the US Chamber of Commerce, have interpreted for Korean Member of Parliament Ji Seong-Ho, and more (I guess there was something inside of that pipe).
I truly believe that I've been provided every faculty in life to succeed at what I do. It's my true path. And, this is what I would like to share with you.
Holloway Interpreting Group isn't just a language services
company--it's a reflection of this journey of mine that
I would like you to benefit from.
Now, I guide up-and-coming language interpreters, teach Korean to Korean adoptees,
and use the experiences provided to me in this life to
contribute to a better world little-by-little.
